Bowen Therapy

What is the BowenFirst™ Therapeutic Approach?

Bowen therapy was named after Thomas A. Bowen (1916-1982) of Geelong, Victoria in Australia. It  is a form of soft tissue manipulation which has evolved since its inception to incorporate the mind-body connection as a therapeutic approach led by the work of Dr. Manon Bolliger,ND. Each treatment consists of sets of soft tissue manipulations on muscle, nerves and tendons, interspersed by short pauses that allow the body to integrate the effects.

Our sensory-motor systems repeatedly respond to trauma and everyday stresses via muscular reflexes. As long as the body’s defenses are hyper-activated, healing will not take place.

Thus, for effective results, we must acknowledge and respect the body’s criteria for healing. Bowen Therapy’s gentle resetting of the physical body encourages the brain to rewire and reset to patterns that preceded injury and regain its own blueprint for health. As a BowenFirst™ practitioner, we set the framework and provide the environment in which the body can best initiate this healing process.

The Bowen Therapy moves stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system and the proprioceptors, sending off information through the central nervous system to the brain. The spindle cells and Golgi tendon bodies reset the muscle’s resting tension level. The surrounding fascia becomes more fluid, allowing greater movement of blood and lymph through the tissue enhancing nutrition to, and waste removal from, the site.
To summarize Bowen Therapy initiates a communication process by which the body will address shifts as needed. This generally occurs over a five to seven day period.

What conditions respond to the Bowen Technique?

From acute sports injuries to chronic conditions such as asthma and allergies, the BowenFirst™ Approach addresses many forms of “dis-ease,” releasing pain and allowing the body’s own healing force to flourish.
Soothing and restorative, it is safe to use on anyone, from newborns to the elderly, because no vigorous manipulations are involved.
Practitioners have found that BowenFirst™ therapy reduces physical, emotional and mental stress; improves joint mobility; increases circulation of lymphatic and venous fluids; enhances the assimilation of nutrients; and eliminates toxins.

In achieving all of the above, Bowen delivers profound, substantial, rapid and lasting relief for a wide range of conditions.  For example:
